What do the songs “Moon River,” “I’m An Old Cowhand From The Rio Grande” and “Autumn Leaves” have in common? Johnny Mercer! Working with different music composers over four decades, Johnny was as prolific a lyricist as he was a singer. He wrote hit songs from the 1930’s to the 1960’s and was the founding president of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Celebrate the songs of Johnny Mercer in this fun and lively group class for intermediate players while learning to play them on uke!
Skills Needed: This is an intermediate level class. You should know a handful of ukulele chords, strums, and rhythms, and be able to read ukulele chord charts. Knowledge of Johnny Mercer songs is not needed.
What to Bring: Please bring your ukulele and a music stand. Handouts will be provided.
Teacher: Susan spent her childhood and adolescence in musical theater. In college, she majored in music before moving on to primary education where she taught grade-school for twenty years and served as the music resource person for grades K-5. Susan moved on from folk music and the mountain dulcimer to swing guitar and vocals and then fell in love with the ’ukulele and has published a well-received book of arrangements using chord melody technique for the ’ukulele. These cover many genres but display a fondness for the music of the 30’s-60’s. Susan has been teaching ukulele and mountain dulcimer since Dusty Strings Music School opened in 2008.
