September 9: Nebraska’s Sea of Sand and Grass
Where can you see miles and miles of grass dotted with sandy patches and shallow ponds or hear the call of the meadow lark and the lowing of cattle? Where does the fragrance of the yucca plant attract its only pollinator? Join us for an informative talk by Monica Macuobrie. from Nebraska Game and Parks about the unique ecosystem of the Nebraska Sandhills.
October 14: The Three Rs
Not reading, riting and rythmatic but rather recycle, reduce and reuse! Join Pearl Rothenberger from Keep Omaha Beautiful to learn how you can help contribute to a healthy urban ecosystem through recycling and other waste reduction strategies. She will cover some practical and simple ways you can make sustainable choices in your everyday life, at home, and at work.
November 11: Omaha’s Water: A Journey
We all use water in our homes, but when the washer empties, the toilet flushes or the plug is pulled in the bathtub where does it all go and what happens to it along the way? Mary Baxter, who works with the Environmental Quality Control Laboratory for the City of Omaha will fill us in on this mystery. We’ll also learn how the city can take “used water” to make resources such as fertilizer and sustainable energy.
December 8: It’s in the Stars
Orion, Taurus the Bull, the Gemini Twins and Canis Major are just a few of the constellations that can be found in the winter sky. But how did they get their names? What are the mythological stories behind the names? What stars can be found in them? Bob Fuchs our stargazing program leader and longtime volunteer will show us how to find these stellar formations and weave for us the story behind them.
