About this Event
Intersectionality is topic that is frequently discussed in regard to race, sexuality, disability, and gender but rarely does anyone discuss its impact on aging. Join Santa Clara County’s Seniors’ Agenda for a full-day Network Summit on intersectionality and aging.
Keynote speakers will be announced soon.
Intersectionality is an analytical framework that sets forth that different forms of inequality operate together, exacerbate each other, and can result in amplified forms of prejudice and harm. The term “intersectionality” was coined and popularized by legal scholar Professor Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw (check out her TED Talk for additional background), and captures the unique, interlocking forms of discrimination and harassment experienced by individuals in the workplace and throughout society.
Different forms of inequality and experiences can lead to different aging experiences, exacerbating older adult poverty, negative health outcomes, and even perceptions of safety, while acknowledging that no two people’s experiences are identical. These intersections can make it hard for some older adults to thrive.
Intended audience: Current and future decision makers, government workers, aging services professionals, social workers, other aging advocates, and related professionals.
Goal: To highlight how our system, which has been designed and can be changed, makes life harder for some people as they age. To make us think about how, through our work, we can promote equity and create spaces where everyone can thrive at every age.
Food will be provided with vegetarian options. Event generously sponsored by Kaiser Permanente.
If you need an accommodation, please contact [email protected] no later than two weeks before the event. Upon arrival at the Summit, visit the registration desk to access your requested services.
