An Alaskan Senator Faces the Extreme Climate of Washington, DC
About this Event

Join American University’s Women & Politics Institute for a conversation with Sen. Lisa Murowski (R-AK), author of the new book, Far From Home: An Alaskan Senator Faces the Extreme Climate of Washington, DC, and WPI Executive Director Betsy Fischer Martin.

In her book, Sen. Murkowski shares an uplifting yet candid account of her more than two decades in public service - spanning her early days in Alaska politics, the rise of the Tea Party, the Trump era, and her role as a pivotal swing vote on some of the nation’s most consequential debates. Known for trying to be a “voice of reason” in an increasingly polarized Capitol, Murkowski offers a rare perspective on what it takes to lead through tumultuous times.

ABOUT SEN. LISA MURKOWSKI

Lisa Murkowski, Alaska’s senior United States Senator, is the first Alaskan-born lawmaker to serve in the Senate. Since 2002, she has built a reputation for working across the aisle and advancing practical, bipartisan solutions with Alaska’s interests at the forefront. A leader on energy and public lands issues, she recognizes that sound national policy can drive job creation, economic growth, higher living standards, and global stability. She supports the safe and efficient production and use of all forms of domestic energy while also advancing renewable energy, increasing efficiency, and fostering innovation. Murkowski has also been a national voice for making the Arctic a strategic priority, pressing for investments in infrastructure, icebreakers, and research to strengthen America’s leadership in the region.

Senator Murkowski serves on the Appropriations Committee (Subcommittees –Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies; Defense; Energy and Water Development; Homeland Security; Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies). She is Ranking Member of the Interior-Environment Subcommittee, a member of the Energy and Natural Resources and Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committees, and chairs the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. A third-generation Alaskan, she was born in Ketchikan and raised in communities across the state.
