_____
Black August is an annual commemoration to remember Black political prisoners and Black freedom struggles in the United States, Caribbean, Africa, and beyond, and to highlight Black resistance against racial, colonial, and imperialist oppression. August represents a unique status in Black resistance – from the Haitian Revolution (August 1791) to the Nat Turner Rebellion (August 1831), from the foundation of the Underground Railroad (August 1842) to the Fugitive Slave Law Convention (August 1850) to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (August 1925), from the March on Washington (August 1963) to the Watts Uprising (August 1965), from the births of Marcus Garvey (August 1887), and Fred Hampton (August 1948) to the deaths of W.E.B. du Bois (August 1968) and George Jackson (August 1971). At the same time, understanding Nelson Mandela's arrest (August 1962) and his life in a long and unbroken line of resistance and sacrifice of Black people throughout history.
