Seize The Summit - film screening and panel discussion
About this Event
Film Screening: Shaqayeq, Adnan, Safa and Tania all survived war, in different countries. Seize the Summit (2024), a documentary directed by Arwa Damon and Binnur Karaevli, follows the four of them on their climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, in a story of hope and the power of the human spirit. War is one of the biggest drivers of forced migration, yet in the public debate on immigration, people like them are more often counted than heard.
A panel discussion follows after the screening. Arwa Damon, a five-time Emmy winner and former CNN senior international correspondent, is joined by barristers Amanda Weston KC (Garden Court Chambers) and Ronan Toal (Garden Court Chambers) and human rights advocate Hanya Aljamal (Goldsmiths LLM graduate, aidx young humanitarian hero 2025)to discuss the importance of the human story, how narratives about migration become policy, and the rise of penal populism across the UK and Europe. Jomana Karadsheh (pending), CNN international correspondent, will moderate the discussion and questions from the floor.
The event is part of the MFIxGoldsmiths Cinema Programme for Autumn 2026.
