Join us during Mainframe Studios' First Friday in Studio #101 for 'Segunda Vida', an exhibition by Evelyn Ahmed.
Evelyn Ahmed is a fiber artist based in Des Moines, Iowa, who has been creating with textiles for eight years. Her work explores the possibilities of material transformation, sustainability, and memory through fabric.
Her current collection, “Segunda Vida,” is made entirely from donated fabrics, trims, and other upcycled materials. Upcycling, the creative process of giving discarded or unwanted items a new purpose, is central to her practice. While working with limited and unpredictable supplies can be challenging, Evelyn embraces those constraints as a source of discovery. Each piece is shaped by the uniqueness of what is available, embroidered lace trims, linen, beads, and other remnants, woven together into something renewed and meaningful.
The inspiration behind “Segunda Vida” comes from a desire to bring earthy tones and textures into harmony. Evelyn draws on colors and materials that remind her of lived experiences and places she has visited, imbuing her work with a sense of personal history and connection. The collection is both a reflection on sustainability and an invitation to see beauty in what might otherwise be overlooked.
