Seeking Asylum Seekers Conference

Jefferson County HRA's membership has decided to take on a new focus for our chapter’s work and mission. We will now bringing more specific value, by Helping Local and State of Wisconsin HR Professionals and their Business Owners, Find and Hire Newcomer Workers from the Immigrant, English as Second Language speaker, and Asylum Seeker populations.

Our intentions are for business owners and their hiring managers to attend and learn about the best practices for hiring, more about the cultures they are hiring into, and about the issues surrounding employing immigrants, asylum seekers, and English as second language speakers.

We are currently developing the event with Deb Reinbold and Deb Sybell from Jefferson Thrive Economic Development. John Weidl, the Whitewater City Manager, will be the opening keynote for the event. We will have our National SHRM representative to support our larger efforts in the space, and Jeff Westra from the Wisconsin Workforce Development Board to help with the State’s efforts.

Currently, we see the possibility of there being up to seven learning tracks for the conference: Factory (Manufacturing), Farm, Tech, Hospitality-Restaurants, Hotels, Service-Caregiving, Skills Training, & English as Second Language for Workers, and are looking for more.

After the event, we would like to co-create a hiring manual and supportive website, developed from the resources from the conference, with our affiliated SHRM Student chapter at Whitewater.
