Seeing Through Your Smartphone

Join us for a beginner-friendly photography workshop that encourages participants to slow down, observe with curiosity, and develop a deeper appreciation for the world around them. Through guided observation exercises and simple photography prompts, participants will explore light, colour, texture, and composition using their smartphone cameras.
Facilitated by artist Aarthi Arunkumar, this workshop will also introduce basic photo editing techniques using Adobe Lightroom Mobile to help participants enhance their images and develop their creative vision.
Whether you're completely new to photography or looking to see your surroundings in a new way, this session offers an accessible and engaging introduction to creative image-making using the device you already carry with you every day.
Participants will need to provide their own smartphone to use during the workshop. Smartphones are not provided.
This workshop is open to all levels, however children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
About the Artist: Aarthi Arunkumar is an Indian Canadian nature photographer with a keen eye for the tiny details and hidden moments in nature. She explores Toronto’s green spaces, using her camera to tell stories about the natural world—how it thrives, adapts, and sometimes struggles. One of her mantras is that photography is a tool for me to be more mindful and be present in the moment. Alongside photography, she is passionate about teaching and has worked in community centers and a private high school. Through both her images and her teaching, Aarthi hopes to inspire conservation and appreciation for the wild spaces around us.
