Springboard'26 is a curated programme of theatre, dance and physical theatre produced by the Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) at Edinburgh College, bringing a mixed bill of original work from emerging artists and recent graduates to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe stage this August, including by Monica Liu who most recently played a key role in 'Drift' by Madeline Squire – the second act in our Common Ground Triple Bill at Citizens Theatre, with which we opened our Pomegranates Festival pop-up series at the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026.
Monica's 'See' is a six-minute solo piece which traces the three stages of life through the lens of the Daoist philosophy of martial arts. It is inspired by the documentary The Grandmaster (Wong Kar-Wai, 2013) which follows the mythic martial artist and teacher of Bruce Lee. Alongside non-combative martial arts movement, the piece weaves in contemporary and Latin dance vocabulary.
The presentation of 'See' in Springboard'26 builds on our successful collaboration with Edinburgh College during Springboard'25 when we brought to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe stage 'Sequins' by Kalubi Mukengela-Jacoby, exploring the traditional Congolese roots of Hip Hop dance culture through the rap poetry of Ian MacMillan.
This year, we are tracing the common origin story of traditional dance and martial arts: both emerged from ritual, survival and discipline. Martial arts are among humanity’s earliest embodied traditions—predating many formal dances as codified movement systems that express philosophy, ethics and identity.
