Secondary School SEN Staff EBSNA training
About this Event
Attendance is a significant concern across many schools, and the reasons behind persistent absence are often more complex than they first appear. For pupils experiencing EBSNA, approaches focused primarily on compliance tend not to be effective, and can sometimes increase distress.
The course supports staff to:
• Spot early indicators of difficulty before patterns of absence become established.
• Consider how the school environment, systems, and relationships may be contributing to non-attendance.
• Put in place practical, person-centred support for pupils with SEND, mental health difficulties, or complex home circumstances.
• Engage more effectively with families, including those who may be difficult to reach.
• Apply restorative approaches that address behaviour and attendance with understanding rather than sanction.
Who Should Attend?
This course is particularly relevant for:
• SENCOs -to better understand the link between unmet needs and non-attendance, and to strengthen their SEND support plans.
• Attendance leads -to move beyond data tracking towards understanding root causes and implementing person-centred responses.
• Pastoral staff -to develop their toolkit for early intervention, family engagement, and restorative practice.
