ABOUT OUR GUESTS | Wren Newman (she/her) and Scot McKay (he/him)
Wren Newman is a respected WCS teacher, mentor, organizer, WSDC event director and chief judge based out of Seattle. She instructs WCS from the very beginners’ first steps, to very experienced dancers, and is always continuing her own education in the dance. As a primary follow in WCS, Wren has a confident, playful style and joyful musicality that her dance partners appreciate, from the newest beginners to pros. Wren also loves switch dancing.
Scot McKay first found country dance at The Little Red Hen and fell in love with dancing and the welcoming community there. He later branched out into West Coast Swing and became a pillar of this community, including serving as a Board Member and President of SSDC. If there is a local event happening, Scot is probably helping with it in some capacity. As a primary leader in WCS, he brings a unique understanding of momentum and the ability to keep the energy in the partnership flowing. As a dance partner he is excellent at adjusting to his partner and making sure they dance their best dance, and also spinny moves that make you go “Whee!” in a fun way.
You can usually find Wren and Scot teaching WCS series weekly on Mondays at Phinney Ridge, and drop ins before the Wednesday night dance at Mercer Island VFW (Scot’s dance is known for its welcoming atmosphere). Watch out for their occasional special workshops in Country 2Step and Nightclub 2Step. If you are looking to dive deep into WCS skills, ask Wren about the Thursday Skill Squad lessons. On Thursdays, Scot teaches Country Two-Step classes at The Little Red Hen.
