On July 7th, we’ll celebrate Seattle’s summer by walking one of its grandest open spaces — Magnuson Park. Once a U.S. Navy airfield and military base, the land was transformed into a massive 350-acre park that now buzzes with life: dog lovers, soccer players, birdwatchers, and shoreline wanderers all share this space. The park is named for Warren G. Magnuson, longtime U.S. Senator from Washington, who was instrumental in shaping mid-20th-century policy and securing resources that helped transform Seattle. Today, his name graces a park that reflects the city’s spirit of reinvention.
Our trek begins near the Magnuson Café & Brewery, before we head southeast into the park. Along the way, we’ll pass an array of sights that make this place uniquely Seattle. There’s the enormous off-leash dog park, where happy pups bound through fields and splash in the water. The duck pond offers a quieter rhythm, alive with birds and ringed by willows. Down by the lakeshore, we’ll encounter the Sound Garden, a set of massive pipes that hum and sing when the wind passes through — yes, the very installation that gave the famous Seattle grunge band its name.
Art is everywhere here. We’ll see Straight Shot, a striking sculpture by Perri Lynch that aligns with sunrise on the summer solstice and sunset on the winter solstice, connecting the rhythms of the sky to the land below. We’ll also pass The Fin Project by John T. Young, a series of massive submarine fins standing upright like a pod of whales frozen mid-dive — a tribute both to naval history and to the living sea just beyond. Between these cultural landmarks, ballfields stretch wide, kids play, and locals soak in the rare Seattle sunshine.
Magnuson Park is big enough that, with a serpentine route, we’ll complete a full five miles without ever leaving its borders. By the time we loop back, the Magnuson Café & Brewery will be open, welcoming us with coffee, salads, and hearty plates. My usual pick is the Apple Kale Salad — fresh, crisp, and perfect for summer. Magnuson is a park that holds history, art, and recreation all in one, making it the perfect place to launch the heart of Seattle’s summer season.
We'll meet out in front of the Cafe, the cycle club, and the high school at 9:30 am and have a wonderful time. The location is really tucked back in there, so make sure that you double-check the map and perhaps even enter the address of the place into your GPS to ensure that your mapping system takes you to the right place.
