Hello Everyone,Welcome to our 15th Annual Seattle Half Marathon 12 Week Build Up (SeaTrain)! This SGLRG tradition has served as a way to keep us moving through the fall months when the sun isn't shining quite as much and the weather conditions can often times be less inviting to head outside for a run. With a little group effort, common focus and great goal, we will be gearing up to run the Seattle Half Marathon!
We have all levels of runner in the Seattle Green Lake Running Group and this particular build up will be geared more towards new runners, those looking for an excuse to become more consistent and those returning from injury or a lengthy break, that would enjoy a nice incremental build up. However, all levels of runner are more than welcome to participate. There will be a suggested training plan to follow and you are more than welcome to modify the runs to better match where you are at to better match your abilities.
We'd love to have you join us at the Saturday Morning Rise & Shine Run for the weekly long runs as we march our way to November 30th! The starting date will be Monday, September 8th and continue all the way to race day! The starting long run distance will be 3 miles and each week the training plan will add a mile to that distance. If you have attended one of our Saturday Morning Rise & Shine Runs previously, you know that we have folks running anywhere from 3 miles to 20 miles on any given Saturday, so there won't be any issues finding company for the distance and pace you are running. What really helps is for you to be sure to RSVP early in the week and share your plan in the comment so the meet up event page. Others that are viewing that page will see the comments and feel more encouraged to attend when they see that others will also be doing something similar. And as you can imagine, over the next 12 weeks you will have the opportunity to run with a variety of other runners!
For the other runs in the week you have some options! You can attend any of our other events that work for your schedule or knock them out with friends or on your own. They main thing is that you do your best to plan ahead, plug your run times into your calendar and when conflict arises, be proactive to adjust your schedule to ensure that you are still able to keep your training going whenever possible. Life will definitely try and get in the way, but the goal will be to not let those obstacles sabotage your training! How do you do that? Add your runs to your calendar, RSVP for events, reach out to friends to see if they can join you for a run and lay your clothes out the night before. There are lots of tricks, but the more you plan ahead, schedule with others and commit the harder it will be for you to flake out. It is super easy to ghost ourselves, but we are a lot less likely to ghost others that are counting on us!
As the long run distance gets longer we will be tackling sections of the half marathon course to give us an idea of what to expect. Some of our runs will be flat and some will have hills. The goal over these 12 weeks is to build confidence, make friends, grow new community and establish some running consistency when most people have moved all their activities inside.
The training plan we will be following will also include opportunities to build strength, develop core stability and improve mobility in our hips to give us the best chance to stay healthy throughout these three months. What you put into this, will likely reflect what you will get out of it! And hopefully there will be enough miles shared that by the end we will all be the best of friends!
It would be awesome for this page to be very interactive with all of you asking questions, sharing experiences, looking for running buddies and creating all kinds of accountability to ensure you won't stop until you cross the finish line at Seattle Center on November 30th!
