About this Event
Join us 11AM Sunday, March 30, for a special Seasonal Studio Visit with artist Joshua-Michéle Ross, featuring his interactive, site-specific piece . In this work, participants will perform and record a one-of-a-kind piece of music together. This event is offered to our supporters at the $1K Breakthrough Level and above.
This presentation is an extension of Ross’s Headlands exhibition The Quieting World. For Séance to Summon A Garden, Ross has gathered field recordings from the surrounding environment. Participants play these assembled musical clips (such as the pulse of a hummingbird’s wing, the call of a yellow-headed blackbird, the rhythmic tapping of nesting woodpeckers, the distant hum of a plane, or the gentle sounding of a distant fog horn) in magical, unique combinations.
Using immersive wireless headphones, Ross guides participants through "instrument"-selection, rehearsal, and performance. Each performance is then recorded and published, creating a sonic collage of the local ecology. No musical experience is necessary.
Equal parts radio-drama, guided meditation, and high-tech improvisational orchestra, Séance to Summon a Garden explores the healing power of listening, nature, and collaboration.
About Seasonal Studio Visits Headlands’ Seasonal Studio Visits, offered to supporters at or above the $1K Breakthrough Level, feature an intimate look at works-in-progress and insight into the creative process.

Artist Bio
Joshua-Michéle Ross is a conceptual and sound-based artist whose work centers on time, ecology, and the restorative power of listening. In response to a visually-dominated world, he uses listening as a disarming medium for revelation, enchantment, and increased connection with the more-than-human world.
Ross has exhibited in the U.S. and abroad including Mengi (Reykjavik, Iceland), The Bo Bartlett Center, Grand Central Art Center, and Pasaquan - a visionary art environment in Buena Vista, Georgia. A forthcoming installation will appear at the Headlands Center for the Arts in spring of 2025.
Ross' work has been reviewed in Hyperallergic, The Los Angeles Times and nominated as Best of the Year in NoProscenium magazine. In 2023 Ross was the recipient of an Andy Warhol Foundation grant through an ongoing residency with Grand Central Art Center. Joshua-Michele Ross lives and works in Oakland, California.
Artist program will take place in Project Space East, on the third floor of Building 944, accessible only by stairs.
