The shift from fossil energy to green energy (wind, solar, green hydrogen) requires large amount of a range of metals to sustain the fabrication of wind turbines, solar panel, cables and batteries. Also, there is an ongoing awareness in the present geopolitical situation, that Europe and our allies should work to become less dependent on other countries for the supply of critical minerals. The Norwegian seabed is known to contain large amount of critical metals. These metals are found in polymetallic sulphide deposits that are formed on and within the seabed by volcanic hydrothermal activity associated with seafloor spreading. In the ongoing discourse on the extraction of these deep-sea minerals there are worries about the possible environmental impacts from such mineral extraction.
This is the background for the project EMINENT (Energy Minerals for the Netzero Transition 2023-2025). The program was funded by the Green Platform program (The Research Council of Norway, SIVA and Innovation Norway) with the aim to establish the basis for an integrated value chain for deep-sea minerals with smaller environmental footprint than current mining operations. The project has developed and demonstrated new technology and methodology within both environmental monitoring, resource exploration, production and mineral processing.
Speakers and panellists:
* Stig-Morten Knutsen, TC-Improved Exploration, The Norwegian Offshore Directorate: "Deep-sea mineral knowledge status and plan for filling the gaps"
* Endre Tvinnereim, Professor, University of Bergen: "Public perceptions of deep-sea mining"
* Anette Broch M. Tvedt, CEO, Adepth Minerals: "The EMINENT project: Building Norway's Seabed Mineral Value Chain"
* Simon Holmström, Senior Deep-Sea Mining Policy Officer, Seas at Risk: "Applying the Precautionary Principle to Deep-Sea Mining"
