About this Event

In conjunction with the exhibition , MOCA Jacksonville is pleased to offer this exclusive hands on workshop with the artist.

This workshop invites participants to reconsider the life of objects through transformation, accumulation, and structural play. Each person will bring one found object they feel drawn to but have not yet used, along with one material to contribute to a shared communal supply. Together, we will build sculptural forms using cardboard (boxes and sheets) as a primary structure, along with a communal collection of miscellaneous materials such as fabric, leather, beads, game pieces, string, and other unexpected elements. Basic tools and materials will be provided, including hot glue, box cutters, scissors, and surface-building compounds (Magic Sculpt / Magic Smooth) for those who wish to experiment with texture and form. Gloves and mixing tools will be available. This workshop emphasizes experimentation, material curiosity, and transformation rather than finished products. No prior experience is required—just a willingness to explore and build.

About the Artist:

Oldenburg obtained her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and graduated with an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design. In 2025, Whitney received the Eden Arts Foundation’s Artists Now Award. She is also the recipient of Cornell University’s Charles Baskerville Scholarship, the Virginia Commonwealth University Fountainhead Fellowship, the Toby Devan Lewis Award, and the Maharam Steam Fellowship. Whitney has also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts with Michelle Grabner. Her work has been written about in Hyperallergic, Wall Street Journal, and New American Paintings, among others. Oldenburg is currently part of the prestigious Elizabeth Foundation Studio Program in New York City, where she lives and works

About MOCA

Located in the heart of historic Downtown, the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville is one of the city’s most significant cultural assets. As the oldest art museum in Northeast Florida and one of the first contemporary art museums to be established in the United States, MOCA is focused on promoting the discovery, knowledge, and advancement of the art, artists, and ideas of our time.

Among the most prominent contemporary art museums in the Southeast, MOCA’s exhibitions and programs set the pace for arts and art-integrated programming on a regional and national stage. Renowned in this community, MOCA casts the spotlight on Jacksonville as a burgeoning, vital arts destination.

The museum is also a cornerstone of Jacksonville’s multibillion-dollar downtown revitalization plan with exhibitions and programs that bring new visitors to the civic core during the day, at night, and on weekends.
