Critter Beads with Imperial Moth Glass
Sculpting Birds, Fish, Bats & more
Saturday, March 28th, from 1 – 5 pm
Learn how to sculpt adorable critters in glass on a mandrel to create charming, sculpted beads. In this class, Erin will guide you through the order of operations—moving from a simple “blob” to finer details. Using birds, fish, and bats as three generalized base shapes, students will discover how these forms can be transformed into a wide variety of designs, and how the small details truly bring each piece to life.
Prerequisites:
Intermediate glass experience (at least 8 recent hours working on the torch) is acceptable for this class. Anyone under the age of 18 must register with an adult, pay, and participate in the class with them. Ages 12+ are appropriate
Who is Imperial moth glass?
Hello! I am Erin, the flameworker behind Imperial Moth Glass. I started working with glass around the time I started graduate school as an entomologist (insects!), back in 2007. When I told my first glass instructor I was a graduate student, she warned me that glass is addictive, and to be careful. It has a habit of derailing other plans.
Boy she was not kidding. Fourteen years later, after a Masters, a Doctorate, and a few more academic positions, my glass obsession has won out. I don’t think it was a coincidence that the year I took an intensive course in glass sculptural bird-making is the same year I turned down a job offer to be a professor. I had to trust my instincts.
I may not be head-down in a microscope anymore, but I am definitely still fixated on miniscule details and precision, and translating my love of the natural world into something uplifting that can call attention to the little things in the natural world worthy of our fascination, protection, and celebration.
