About this Event

We deal with printed images every day. Anything that is made in a reproducible format is a print; photocopies, posters, photographs, band t-shirts etc.

Fine art print has been traditionally defined through the technical processes of relief, intaglio, lithography and screen printing. The line between print art and other printed forms has been blurred as artists re-examine the traits that define print practice, with the proliferation of digital processes playing a major part.

This class teaches a process-based approach to making prints, covering the technical aspects of screenprinting, and looking at how the process informs the strategy of making art; at how the medium or the technique exists as the means to realise an idea.

These classes are suitable for beginners through to experienced artists who want to focus on the particular technique of screen printing.

Screenprinting classes are taught by Amy Dougherty.

Materials:

The printmaking studio is well-equipped and provides a safe and sociable working environment.

Class cost includes basic workshop materials such as rags, newsprint, solvent and screen cleaner, class equipment such as rollers, palette knives and squeegees, and the use of printing presses and screen print tables.

There will be a screen emulsion and cleaner fee of $25. Please bring this to class in cash.

Materials you will need to bring to class:

Screenprint ink – available from Art Zone or online from Gordon Harris. Please note, you can buy screenprinting paste from Art Zone which converts acrylic paint into screenprint ink. You can start with just a few colours, such as red, yellow, blue and white.

A3 or A2 cartridge paper. Bockingford Pads are useful.

It is advisable to bring an art kit with you including the usual suspects: pens (including black sharpie and fine line pens over 1mm - useful for drawing) pencils, a craft knife, scissors, glue stick along with any printmaking tools you like to use frequently.

Health and Safety Gear: Apron, gloves (thin disposable ones are useful for inking up and ordinary kitchen sink gloves are useful for cleaning surfaces/screens etc), closed in shoes.

Imagery/ideas – maybe you have a visual diary, a concept or some photos on your phone (for example). It is advisable to have a starting point or some idea of what you might want to explore beforehand because class time goes quickly.

Petty cash for items you may buy from art school/ photocopying costs etc
