About this Event

The Centre for Political Ethnography at the University of Southampton and the Latin American Centre at the University of Oxford are pleased to invite you to a screening of Territory, followed by a debate with the director, Telma Hoyler.

The event will take place on Friday, 5 June 2026, from 4–6 PM, at the Latin American Centre, University of Oxford, 1 Church Walk, Oxford OX2 6LY.

About the movie

Territory centres on Geraldo, a left-wing candidate for São Paulo’s City Council in the 2024 municipal elections. A long-time activist in the Workers’ Party, Geraldo faces the challenge of adapting to modern campaign strategies, appealing to evangelical voters, and confronting the rise of the far right within his community in the city’s southern periphery.

Far from the traditional “hero’s journey,” the film explores how religion, crime, and entrepreneurial values are reshaping people’s perceptions of politics and democracy. It offers an intimate look at how communities in urban peripheries experience politics, showing that political representation extends beyond elections: it is built through everyday relationships and trust.

About the director

Telma Hoyler is an ethnographer of politics and a documentary filmmaker based in São Paulo. Her work investigates how politics is experienced in everyday urban life, both within institutions and in the relationships through which people engage with political authorities. She is a researcher at the Centre for Metropolitan Studies (CEM/USP) and teaches at IDP-SP. She has also been part of the Global Research Network on People and Parliaments.

We would be delighted to see you there.
