Join us for an evening with local Hmong American filmmaker and artist, Pader Xiong.
About this Event

2025 marks the 50 year anniversary of the Hmong peoples’ resettlement in America after fleeing persecution and The Vietnam War (The Secret War) in Southeast Asia. Home-land: Hmong American Women features the stories of five Hmong women (Rosanna Yang, Sheng Elizabeth Lor, Emily Yang, Jouapag Lee, and Kho Lor) along with intimate imagery of the filmmaker being dressed in traditional Hmong clothing by her mother. Each woman shares her Hmong American experience, aspirations, and how she aims to make her own “Home-land” in America.

Pader Xiong (she/her) is a first generation Hmong-American creator whose work is informed by her Hmong heritage, family relations, and female identity. She is currently an emerging artist resident with ArtStart’s 2025–26 cohort, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee with a BFA Film degree. Her short film, Home-land: Hmong American Women, had its professional festival screening debut at the 2025 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and has also been selected for the CineAsian online screening, Milwaukee Film Festival, Black and Brown Femme Festival, and Seattle Asian American Film Festival. Her artistic vision reflects her unique identity as a Hmong-American—a complex and multifaceted exploration of relationships, cultural values, and familial spaces through various mediums such as film, collage, printmaking, zines, and multimedia. The foundation of her work is driven by a deep desire to satisfy her own body and mind as she confronts conformity in the fight for visibility and representation.
