About this Event
Science Utah: The birds and the bees - and the databases of their information
Natural history collections are libraries of life, storing billions of specimens around the world. How are these collections making all of this information available so you can understand the world that was, and the world we live in today? Come hear from an entomologist and see up close some stunning butterflies, beetles and other bugs and find out how you can (virtually) prowl through museum drawers around the world.
Christy Bills has been the invertebrates collections manager at the NHMU since 1998. At the museum, she has worked in exhibit design, outreach, education, volunteer management and of course, curation. Some of her favorite parts of working at the museum are the cute kids she gets to meet, as well as collaborations with scientists around the world. Some of the most intriguing parts of working with the insect collection are deep dives into the history, collector biographies and geography of a collection that spans a hundred and thirty years and six continents, but focuses right here in Utah.
She loves sharing the wonderful world of bugs with all kinds of different people - and knows that entomology is for everyone.
This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Please only reserve the number of tickets you will use.
About Science Utah: The Science Utah Lecture Series is dedicated to bringing the latest scientific discoveries and discussions to the public, for free, by offering engaging lectures led by Utah-based scientists and researchers working in various fields.
