Science Time: Extreme Events in a Changing Climate
Barry Keim is a Professor and Program Director of Environmental Health, Climate, and Sustainability in the School of Public Health at the Louisiana State University-Health Sciences Center. Here, he unites weather and climate to public health. Previously, he served as Louisiana State Climatologist from 2003-2023, and before that he was the New Hampshire State Climatologist from 1994-2003. In the role of State Climatologist, he was charged with archiving all weather and climate information and data for respective states and making these data available to the public, to researchers, to lawyers, and to local, state and federal agencies. He was also charged with monitoring the weather of my states to assess impacts on public health, agriculture, and the economy. A third charge was to educate the state on current weather and climate issues. This involved a commitment to regularly speaking with the media, whereby he has given several thousands of media interviews over his career including CNN, PBS Newshour, BBC, CBC, Russian National Radio, French National Radio, Portuguese National Radio, NPR, The Weather Channel, National Geographic, History Channel, BBC World News, Discovery Channel, The New York Times, Washington Post, ABC News Radio, CBS Radio, USA Today, Christian Science Monitor, Readers Digest, Wall Street Journal, U.S News and World Report, Los Angeles Times, among many others. Though he is no longer State Climatologist, he continues in many of these roles and routinely interact with the media.
