About this Event
Please note, this event has been postponed to October 2024. The date is TBC.
Abstract
Over the last decade, with the rise of populist authoritarian nationalisms across the world, a much more explicit politics of whiteness and racial supremacy has returned to the public sphere. This has happened across the world - from the Middle East/North Africa to South Asia, South America and Eastern Europe/ Russia. Through SCI funding, we have built a network of scholars addressing this widespread revival of ‘whiteness beyond the West’. James Mark will discuss what is politically at stake in these revivals; the uses of ‘white innocence’; and the importance of history and memory to these racial myths that often underpin contemporary authoritarian turns.
