Sci Fi Story Club: Stories by James Tiptree Jr., aka Alice Sheldon
About this Event
Join us on Zoom Wednesday November 18th at 6:00 p.m. PST for the next gathering of the Sci Fi Story Club. We’ll be discussing three short stories by James Tiptree Jr. aka Alice Sheldon.
Born Alice Bradley in 1915, she won acclaim for the science fiction and speculative stories she published under the name “James Tiptree Jr.” starting in 1967. She chose the pseudonym partly to avoid the extra attention women writers faced in the male-dominated world of science fiction. Her Tiptree stories met with immediate success and won all the major SF awards in the 1970s, as well as convincing many male critics that the author was indeed a man, until her identity was discovered in 1977. Alice was brought up in an intellectual family in Chicago and lived a varied life, including stints living in Africa, working as an artist, illustrator, and art critic, serving in the Air Force during World War II and later as an intelligence officer with the CIA, and completing a doctorate in experimental psychology. She married twice and stayed with her second husband, Huntington Sheldon, from 1945 until they both passed away in 1987. Her stories are mind-expanding, challenging and original, and still timely for readers of SF and speculative fiction today.
