Schubert, Rachmaninoff, & Arensky

Pianist and Schubert scholar Daniel Rieppel is joined by Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra violinist Nina Tso-Ning Fan and cellist Jane Cords-O’Hara, a longtime member of The Knights, for an evening of Romantic music at The Museum of Russian Art.

The program pairs Schubert’s lyrical Piano Sonata in C major with selections from Rachmaninoff’s Preludes and Études-Tableaux, works that showcase the composer’s extraordinary range of color, expression, and virtuosity. Rieppel, a Fulbright Scholar whose research on Schubert has taken him to Vienna and Oxford, is joined by Fan and Cords-O’Hara for Arensky’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor. Composed in 1894 in memory of celebrated Russian cellist Karl Davydov, the richly melodic and deeply expressive trio remains one of Arensky’s best-known works.

Daniel Rieppel, piano

Minnesota native Daniel Rieppel is a pianist, chamber musician, and recognized Schubert scholar. He made his solo recital debut at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in a performance subsequently broadcast in its entirety by Minnesota Public Radio. He has appeared as a soloist with ensembles throughout the Midwest and has performed widely in the United States, Latin America, and Europe, including appearances in Vienna and Salzburg.

Rieppel’s research on Schubert has taken him to Vienna, New York, and Oxford University and has been supported by the Center for Austrian Studies and a Fulbright Scholar Research Award. He holds degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana University, and the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree under Lydia Artymiw. Rieppel is Professor of Music at Southwest Minnesota State University and a faculty member at the MacPhail Center for Music.

Nina Tso-Ning Fan, violin

Violinist Nina Tso-Ning Fan is a full-time member of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and an active recitalist and chamber musician in the Twin Cities. A recipient of a McKnight Artist Fellowship for Performing Musicians, she has appeared at festivals throughout the United States, including Aspen, Mainly Mozart, Festival Mozaic, and the Grand Teton Music Festival.

A native of Colorado, Fan earned her bachelor’s degree in French literature from Harvard University while studying violin with James Buswell at the New England Conservatory of Music. She later received her master’s degree in violin performance from Indiana University, where she studied with Sylvia Rosenberg and Paul Biss. Fan is also a faculty member at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis.

Jane Cords-O’Hara, cello

Irish-born cellist Jane Cords-O’Hara is a Minneapolis-based chamber musician and longtime member of The Knights, the acclaimed New York–based chamber orchestra. With The Knights, she has performed at Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, Ravinia, and internationally, and has collaborated with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham, Dawn Upshaw, Chris Thile, and Béla Fleck. She can be heard on several Sony Classical recordings, including Azul, featuring Yo-Yo Ma.

Cords-O’Hara has also performed with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Minnesota Opera, and Silkroad Ensemble. Deeply engaged in chamber music, she performs throughout the Twin Cities with Fíora Ensemble and Ladyslipper Ensemble. She studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and Mannes College of Music in New York. Cords-O'Hara currently teaches at Augsburg University and maintains a private studio in Minneapolis.
