School holiday program-Japanese cultural experience for kids
About this Event
At this workshop participants will be given a tasty introduction to Japanese culture and discover a love for the arts and crafts of Japan.
Participants will experience creating calligraphy from the three sets of Japanese written characters; Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji and will be instructed in their chosen script and making traditional Nerikiri (Japanese confectionery).
Between each of these sessions there will be a break for drinks/snacks(BYO), Japanese craft games.

*The participants are able to take their own art home after the workshop
*BYO drinks and snacks
*Nerikiri is gluten-free and vegan friendly.
*Nerikiri ingredients: Adzuki beans, Lima beans, sugar, glutinous rice flour (gluten-free, despite its name), and natural food colouring.
*Please inform us if your children have food allergies.
Japanese calligraphy instractor-Maiko Howell
Maiko was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and began doing calligraphy at age 5 under the guidance of her mother - also a calligrapher. Maiko became a master of Japanese traditional calligraphy in 2017 and has held workshops for children and adults throughout Eastern Japan, and now lives in Tasmania with her family.
Nerikiri(Japanese confectionery) instructor-Minako Stewart
Minako has started making Nerikiri regularly since 2021 and has graduated from two Nerikiri courses with Japanese teachers. She is also a Kimono teacher, Tea ceremony and Japanese dance practitioner. She is excited to share the beauty of Japanese culture with you!
