Join us on Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 9am to 4pm both days. 10 working spots ($275) will be selected, audit spots ($125) are unlimited. What to expect:
A two-day workshop on canine detection (also called scent detection/ scent work-similar to police “drug-dogs”, “bomb-dogs”, etc.) Participants will be presented with the basics of teaching a dog to detect and respond to legal odors. All levels are welcome. Results will vary. There will be an emphasis on reading dogs during detection training. Non-compulsive, reward-based methods are used. Participants must have a safe, temperature-controlled environment to keep their dogs when not actively working (a vehicle kennel is preferred). Owners are expected to keep their dogs from interfering with the class and other teams as they work.
Required Materials: (I may have extras &/or we can share, but having your own is best).
1. Non-restrictive (doesn't restrict dog's breathing, nor "correct" the dog by constriction) harness with "D-ring" on the top (D-ring along the dog's spine) OR a non- restrictive 1- or two-inch flat collar.
2. Long-line (lead that is 8'-30' in length).
3. Rewards. MANY of them- food, treats, toys- whatever your dog loves and will work to acquire. Bring several of them please.
4. Note-taking material.
5. Water & water dish.
6. Optional- if you have a particular odor you’d like your dog to learn to detect, please bring that odor source.
7. Anything you need to stay comfortable (your own chair, water/drinks, snacks etc..)

About our workshop presentor Kyle:
Kyle McCraith comes with over 25 years of experience in the canine field. He is a Master Trainer of Utility (patrol) Dogs, Explosives Detection Dogs, Firearms Detection Dogs, and Wildlife Detection Dogs with the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA; NAPWDA.com). He’s handled and trained patrol/detection dogs as an Albany Police Officer and K9 Trainer/Master Sergeant with The Albany County Sheriff’s Office. Kyle was Department Chair and instructed canine courses for 8 years at the collegiate level at SUNY Cobleskill’s Canine Training and Management BT Degree program. He currently is sole proprietor of KM K9 LLC (kmcanine.com) where he provides private, in-home assessments and training, trains and maintains working K9 Teams for the Bassett Healthcare Network and Ellis Hospital, conducts national certifications for Explosive Detection Canine Teams nationally, and teaches decoying, obedience, tracking and detection
