After spending far too much time wondering why so many men on dating apps pose with fish, I decided to make an entire exhibition about it.
What a Catch is a satirical response to the familiar dating-app trope of men proudly posing with fish as proof of masculinity, success, or desirability. By bringing this familiar image into the studio—and removing it from its "authentic" fishing context—the work reveals just how carefully identity is performed for the camera.
The portraits feature men holding fish that obscure or interrupt the expected focal points of the body. The fish becomes both prop and punchline: an object of pride that simultaneously conceals, mocks, and replaces the subject's attempt at self-presentation. Through exaggerated studio portraiture, the series explores vulnerability, performance, and the often absurd ways we present ourselves in the search for connection.
The work asks:
• What are men expected to perform in dating culture?
• Why are certain symbols repeatedly used to signal worth?
• When does confidence tip into parody?
This exhibition wouldn't exist without the absolute legends who were willing to tackle a very unusual brief: "Would you mind getting naked and holding a fish?" and trusted me when I promised, "It'll make sense in the gallery."
Somehow... they all took the bait.
Come along for a drink, a laugh, some surprisingly thoughtful conversations about masculinity... and an alarming number of fish.
I'd love to see you there
