Something Beautiful Happened Last Thursday... We had our Eastern Wharf season launch and, aside from vendor tents taking flight like parachutes into the sky, we had an absolute blast.
But I want to share something that made this launch particularly special.
When I started the Savannah Sunset Market last April, I did what felt natural... I went looking. I visited every farmers market in the region. I drove out to actual farms to meet people who weren't already at markets. I sat in vendors' kitchens, watched their process, and worked alongside some incredible people who helped bring this vision to life.
And I ran into something I didn't expect: finding farmers who could actually participate was hard.
So for much of our first season, we had very little farm-fresh presence and we felt that absence deeply.
Along the way, I met people with extraordinary stories. Farmers whose land had been in their families for generations. Some who received their land as part of the 40 Acres and a Mule promise, a reparation made to African Americans that was broken for most, but honored for a few. Farmers whose great-grandparents had held that same soil.
Every story was different. Every piece of land had a history.
And in every conversation, I also heard this: in order for a farmer to truly benefit from what they grow, they need more than land. Some needed business knowledge.. the how. Many needed funding. And many simply needed a welcoming place to bring what they'd worked so hard to grow.
Collard greens. Tomatoes. Sweet potatoes. So much goodness from this earth.
Late last year, I met someone pretty remarkable.
He and his family were at a community market hosted by Representative Carl Guilliard, and after talking for a while, I realized he was someone who could help connect me with farmers. He came out to one of our markets, saw what we'd built, and shared that he was growing an organization called AgriUnity, dedicated to giving family-owned farmers like himself the resources, funding, and tools to keep their land and build generational wealth from it.
Months of conversation later, he called with an idea:
What if we created a Seed to Sunset Market program where our farmers dedicate a portion of their land to grow specifically for your markets?
I was speechless.
I believe with everything in me that if everyone doesn't win, it's not worth doing. I'm not interested in building something that doesn't have true reciprocity at its core.
And when there's a triple win? That's when something becomes unstoppable.
So last Thursday, at our season launch, a group of incredible men, who also happen to be farmers who are joining in on the Seed to Sunset Market initiative, showed up and showed OUT.
They brought strawberries 🍓 and tomatoes 🍅 and collard greens 🥗 and squash and zucchini and eggs 🥚 and beef 🥩.
They were, without question, the Belles of the Ball. 😂
We are just getting started, and I could not be more grateful for this community, these farmers, and what we're building together.
The Savannah Sunset Market at Eastern Wharf is the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 4:30pm - 7:30pm.
We have amazing food artisans, makers, music and food trucks...
And we have farm fresh produce straight from Georgia's family farms.
We hope you'll come out, support small businesses and support our farmers.
See you at the next one.
