Are you fit enough to be a police officer? Sault Police are giving you the chance to find out.The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) is offering four fitness test practice sessions this November for those who are interested in a career in policing. Sessions are taking place on Wednesday, November 20 at 8:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 23 at 8:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Capacity is limited to 20 participants per session.
“The fitness test can seem intimidating, but this is a great opportunity to assess your current fitness level in a supportive and encouraging environment,” says Derek MacFarlane, Sergeant of Uniform Recruitment. “It’s a chance to try the test without the pressure of the real thing and see where you may need improvement.”
Passing the fitness test is a requirement for those applying to be a Constable, Special Constable, or Auxiliary Constable. While the sessions are intended to be for learning and practice, those who pass the practice test may choose to use the results in their application to SSMPS for up to four months. Those who do not pass will receive constructive feedback on how to improve their fitness.
The fitness test practice sessions are part of Sault Police’s broader recruitment strategy. The Service has been approved to hire seventeen new officers over the next four years and, with several members becoming eligible for retirement soon, additional job openings are likely.
