In this talk, author and historian Bill Laws charts the working lives of women in Herefordshire between 1916 and 1966—a period of remarkable social, political, and economic change.
From the grit of domestic service and the blast of the munitions factories, to the green fields of the Land Girls and the rhythm of the typing pool, women’s work evolved rapidly through war, hardship, and transformation. Teaching, clerical work, and public service opened new possibilities—but not always on equal terms.
Drawing on local stories, interviews, and rich historical detail, this talk explores 50 dramatic years of change for working women in the Shire.
