The World Premiere of TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT by Shualee Cook is a surprising and delightful mash-up of The Tempest and Alice in Wonderland.
About this Event

SATE presents Tempest in a Teapot, September 11-28, at The Chapel

SATE continues its SEASON OF TRANSFORMATIONS with the world premiere of Tempest in a Teapot by Shualee Cook. At age 10, Alice Liddell inspired Lewis Carroll to write Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But at age 21, she finds herself trapped between the fantasy world created for her, and the restrictive Victorian world of Oxford, England – each with a very specific role she is expected to play. Then a chance meeting with Carroll after years of silence leads her down the rabbit hole again to the Mad Tea Party, where a seemingly casual suggestion by Carroll that she read Shakespeare’s The Tempest turns into a philosophical treasure hunt. With help from the Mad Hatter, March Hare, Dormouse and Cheshire Cat, Alice proceeds to act out the classic play in hope that it holds the key to her crisis of identity, and offers a way of dealing with her magical but complicated past.

Performances are September 11-28, Wednesdays-Saturdays at 8:00PM, at The Chapel, 6238 Alexander Drive (63105). Tickets are $20.00 for artists, seniors, and students; $25.00 for general admission.

Shualee Cook’s play, The Music of the Goddess, was produced as part of SATE’s inaugural Aphra Behn Festival in 2017. SATE’s co-producers, Ellie Schwetye and Rachel Tibbetts say the following about collaborating with Shualee Cook again, “We are delighted to reconnect with Shualee to fully produce Tempest in a Teapot after featuring her play Music of the Goddess in our inaugural Aphra Behn Festival. Shualee is a clever and thoughtful writer whose work embodies the mission of SATE."

Tempest in a Teapot received a staged reading as part of the 2016 Idle Muse Athena Festival in Chicago, and a reading in St. Louis at R-S Theatrics in 2015.

The performing ensemble includes: Summer Baer, Kay Ailee Bush, Adam Flores, Keating, Chrissie Watkins, and John Wolbers.

Rachel Tibbetts will direct the production. Kristen Strom is the production stage manager and assistant director. Mason Hunt will serve as the assistant stage manager and master electrician. Lighting design by Bess Moynihan. Costume design by Liz Henning and Kayla Lindsay. Props by Cece Entz and Katie Leemon. Graphic design by Dottie Quick. Ellie Schwetye and Bess Moynihan co-designed the set, and Lex Ronan will house manage. Schwetye and Tibbetts are co-producers.

Funding for Tempest in a Teapot made possible by Missouri Arts Council and the Siteman Family Charitable Fund.
