Learn the tradition of sashiko mending; embellish a denim patch with beautiful running-stitch embroidery!
In this workshop, Allie Davis (they/them), will help you create a patch to embellish or mend a garment, while giving you some of the historical and cultural context behind indigo dyeing and sashiko stitching.
Sashiko is a Japanese stitching style that was originally used by working-class people as a means to mend used clothing and household items. But it is so much more than that! The even geometric patterns of sashiko create a beautiful decorative effect which elevate repairs to works of art.
In a world of fast-fashion waste and skyrocketing prices, learning to mend and customize your clothes is a superpower. The sashiko-style running stitch you will learn in this workshop can also be applied to mend and extend the life of your favourite garments.
WORKSHOP INFO:
This is a 2.5 hour workshop where Allie will walk you through the history of sashiko as well as teach you the fundamentals of creating your own decorative running stitch. You'll leave the workshop with your own patch of decoratively stitched denim, and be ready to apply this beautiful tradition to your own garments.
Lesson will run from 1:00-3:30 with open studio time available from 3:30-5:30 to continue mending or work on a project of your own.
Age Appropriate for: Adults and Teens (14+)
Participants under 18 automatically recieve a 20% discount at checkout.
This workshops materials are included for you to use and take with you when you're finished to continue your mending journey.
About the Instructor:
Allie Davis (they/them) is a textile artist and educator who's passion for mending and natural dying is driven by a commitment to environmental sustainability. A self-labelled "dabbler," they enjoy exploring craft techniques and value what is learned from making mistakes. Their work is a celebration of imperfection and the act of slowing down the process.
