Florence (Lauren Ambrose) isn’t much of a hit with the hunky boys in her hometown, but she doesn’t care – all she wants to do is to SURF, baby! But when her host of extreme multiple personalities start acting up, and surfer boys and beach babes start turning up extremely dead, it’s up to her to figure out who might be slaughtering among the sand dunes – even if it’s her! If she doesn’t, she might never land the dreamy, brainy Starcat (Buffy star Nicholas Brendon) OR defeat her stuck-up sex-crazed rival, Marvel Ann (Amy Adams, somehow???)!
A delirious parody of the 1960s Malibu surf-rock movie craze made popular by Gidget, Elvis, Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello, Psycho Beach Party is full of howlingly weird one-liners, breathlessly horny energy (oh those stubborn urine stains!) and a cheerful queer pluckiness that sails above its wildly un-PC language and tableaux. The underrated film takes one of the most “wholesome” genres in cinema history and turns it on its ear, then gives it a good thump with a hefty surfboard for good measure.
