Sashiko, (literally translated as “little stabs”) is a style of hand stitching developed in northern Japan hundreds of years ago. Initially, a purely practical method of strengthening and increasing the warmth of workers’ clothing, sashiko eventually became more decorative by including designs in the stitching. During the past century, appreciation of sashiko has spread throughout the world and is now considered an art form in and of itself. In addition to using sashiko to reinforce or embellish clothing, it is also used for wall hangings, quilts, tablecloths, pillows, placemats, and other household items.
Students in this class will learn about the sashiko’s history, tools and materials used, and different styles of traditional designs. They will be introduced to the “unshin” rhymic stitching style, the “kasani” method of securing stitching, and “boro” the use of sashiko in mending and creating new fabric.
Students will learn and practice a new stitch in each class. They will make at least three different designs. Students can use the designs learned in class to create unique items at home like a coaster, pillow cover, small table runner, pin cushion, rice bag, or all four!
