Sao Tanaka - Counter Sublime

Opening Reception | Saturday, November 14, 2026
5–8 PM | One Mile Gallery | Kingston, NY
One Mile Gallery is delighted to present COUNTER-SUBLIME, a solo exhibition of paintings by Sao Tanaka.
In the Hudson Valley, where the Hudson River School helped define the American tradition of landscape painting, Tanaka offers a compelling alternative to the monumental sublime.
Rather than depicting nature as something to be conquered, surveyed, or possessed, Tanaka creates imagined landscapes that exist beyond borders, fixed horizons, and familiar geography. Her paintings evoke primordial worlds where water, stone, light, and atmosphere continually emerge, dissolve, and transform.
Drawing from traditional Japanese painting techniques, contemporary abstraction, creation myths, and Eastern philosophical traditions, Tanaka invites us to experience landscape not as spectacle, but as mystery—something fluid, unknowable, and perpetually becoming.
COUNTER-SUBLIME challenges how we see and understand the natural world, replacing grandeur and mastery with uncertainty, openness, and quiet wonder.
Please join us on Saturday, November 14, from 5–8 PM, to celebrate the opening and experience Sao Tanaka's extraordinary work.
Free and open to the public.
