Hexham Abbey will once again be bathed in candlelight for Sankta Lucia - a breath-taking traditional Scandinavian event celebrating light in the darkest month of the year.The Edinburgh Lucia Choir will perform traditional Scandinavian inspired seasonal songs in this stunning traditional Sankta Lucia performance. This magical event sees Lucia processing around the darkened Abbey wearing a crown of candles. She is followed by the rest of the choir dressed in white gowns, carrying candles.
Sankta Lucia is a well-established event in the Swedish calendar leading up to Christmas. It originates from both pagan and Christian traditions of bringing people together for music, nourishment, and celebration of light. It's a delightful, relaxing event to enjoy in the lead up to Christmas.
Would you like to enjoy traditional cinnamon rolls and glögg after the ceremony? 150 tickets are available with refreshments (a non-alcoholic option is available). These will be freshly made and served by the brilliant Hextol Foundation charity. These need to be pre-purchased.
Sankta Lucia is being brought to Hexham Abbey for the fifth time by Katrin Auld with the support of Hexham Community Partnership. Hexham is the only place in the North of England to be hosting the Edinburgh Lucia Choir for this unique event.
Please note seating is unreserved for this event and some seats have a restricted view. Doors open at 6.30pm and the event starts at 7pm.
Toddlers and babies on laps are admitted free and do not need a ticket.
ACCESS: Seating can be reserved for those with disability access needs. You will be able to add information at check-out. Hexham Abbey offers step-free access around its ground floor where the event is being held.
