REASSURING NEW MEXICO SCREWWORM UPDATE
Some exhibitors have asked whether New World screwworm should affect their plans to attend our shows. Here is the official update:
✅ New Mexico’s state screwworm website currently reports: “There are no active infestations or infested zones in New Mexico.”
✅ On August 30, USDA released New Mexico’s only screwworm-infested zone after confirming that all requirements for release had been met. No additional cases have been detected since the single case in June.
✅ That action removed the New Mexico-specific domestic movement requirements for livestock and pets from the former zone, including the additional screwworm inspections previously required for interstate movement.
These are reassuring developments for exhibitors traveling with their dogs. State and federal officials continue surveillance, and normal travel preparation and routine attention to your dogs’ health remain sensible precautions. Keep wounds protected and contact your veterinarian about any suspicious or worsening wound.
