Sand Study Stewardship & International Coastal Clean-up Dance Party!
About this Event
Come to Coney Island Creek to connect with and clean this lesser known tidal inlet, the sole remaining creek in what was once an interconnected series of streams in a tidal marsh.
Just five blocks away but a world apart from its famous amusement park neighbor, this vulnerable water-body is beloved by fishers and birders and also becoming choked with trash and migrating sand from outflowing CSOs and the tidal currents. Gather with us to learn about this important habitat, how it has been altered and contaminated by human bioengineering and extractive industry, and how it persists as a sanctuary for humans and other living beings.
First join artist and researcher Nora Almeida to explore migration and memory through a participatory sand study at Coney Island Creek. Registration will be capped at the first 25 signups. Please arrive between 9:30-9:45.
Then join a day of exploring the creek through our self guided scavenger hunt and help pick up trash and document the kinds of garbage as part of a global effort to track the pollution in our waterways for International Coastal clean-up.
We'll be joined by HONK family band to keep the spirits up.

Come join an embodied exploration of memory and migration through a sand study and stewardship action at Coney Island Creek with Nora Almeida. Participants are invited to engage in a short attunement, write an ephemeral inscription in the sand, and clean the shore as the tide rises and swallows their messages.
Nora Almeida is an urban swimmer, performance artist, printmaker, and activist based in Lenapehoking. Her art explores intersections of archiving, environmental investigation, and spatial disruption. Long term public artworks and performances—Refuge, Creek: Two Cavities of the Heart, Open Water, Last Street End in Gowanus (2021), and Land Use Intervention Library (2022)—focus on relationships between people, more-than-human species, emergency, and urban ecology. She is co-founder of the Hydrofeminist Map Collective and an educator at CUNY.

More on the International Coastal Clean-up...
The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), launched by the Ocean Conservancy in 1986, isthe world's largest single-day volunteer effort for ocean and waterway health. Held annually on the third Saturday of September, it mobilizes millions globally across 150+ countries to remove trash and log debris data.
What to plan for and accessibility:
This event partly takes place on uneven ground and on unpaved surfaces and will involve walking and bending. Closed toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty are highly recommended.
