About this Event
Explore one of the oldest cities in the Western Hemisphere with a local historian passionate about sharing the rich stories of Puerto Rico's vibrant past.
My name is José Alonso Hernández, a public historian with a Bachelor’s degree in European History from the University of Puerto Rico, and currently completing my Master’s in Puerto Rican and Caribbean History, focusing on the urban and industrial development of Puerto Rico in the 20th century. With years of research and a personal connection to the island's history, I’m excited to take you on a journey through time!
During our tour, we’ll walk through the narrow cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, discovering the blend of Spanish colonial architecture, local folklore, and the fascinating history that has shaped this unique city. As we visit iconic landmarks like El Morro, La Fortaleza, and San Juan Cathedral, I'll share in-depth historical context, giving you a deeper understanding of how this city has evolved over the centuries—from its strategic importance during the Spanish Empire to its role in modern Puerto Rican culture.
But beyond the well-known sites, I’ll also take you off the beaten path to uncover lesser-known gems and offer insights into the cultural traditions that make Old San Juan so special. We’ll talk about the influence of African, Indigenous, and European cultures in shaping the local identity.
While the tickets for this tour are free, we encourage the public to tip your tour guide.
Join us on at Plaza Colón for an unforgettable experience!
