“We are excited to host the Gourd Dance and Intertribal Powwow in the HHPC gymnasium this year,” said Brandon Ashley, Director of the Native American Center. “This change ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all attendees, no matter the weather.” The Powwow is a vibrant celebration of Native culture, bringing together dancers, drummers, and spectators from across the Four Corners region and beyond. This year’s event will feature powerful drum performances by the Northern Host Drum: Iron Bear from Table Mesa, NM, representing Cree, Pueblo and Navajo traditions, and the Southern Host Drum, Smoke Stack from Dooalkaii, NM, proudly carrying the rhythms of the Dine' people.
Admission is free, and the day’s events run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., featuring:
• Gourd Dance – starting at 12 p.m.
• Intertribal Powwow – Grand Entry at 6 p.m.
• Native Arts and Crafts Fair
• Delicious traditional and contemporary foods
• Family-friendly activities for all ages
• No outside lawn chairs will be permitted
“This is a wonderful opportunity to gather with others,” added Ashley. “It is also a day to bridge culture and community, connecting San Juan College students and community members to the rich heritage and enduring legacy of the region’s Indigenous peoples.”
