About this Event

Experience authentic Samurai martial arts. Whether you're a complete beginner or a martial arts enthusiast, join us for a unique weekend seminar exploring the dynamic art of the Short Staff (Jodo) used by the samurai of Hakata, Japan. Experience authentic martial traditions in a welcoming, hands-on environment, with a tight knit group of fellow enthusiasts, no prior experience required.

December 5 (Saturday)

Jodo (Samurai Short Staff): 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM @ Fulton Park Community Center

December 6 (Sunday)

Jodo (Samurai Short Staff): 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM @ Fulton Park Community Center (venue may change)

A bonus Daito Ryu (Samurai Grappling) session may be added on Sunday and hosted at the Portland Aikikai, but this is not yet confirmed.



What to Expect

Jodo (Samurai Short Staff): Learn the art of the samurai's short staff, a discipline blending movement, focus, and tradition. Jodo techniques were developed to defend against sword attacks, emphasizing timing, precision, and control. No experience or equipment necessary. All are welcome to try this rare and fascinating martial art.


Who Should Attend?

Anyone interested in Japanese culture, martial arts, or samurai history. Beginners looking for a friendly, supportive introduction. Martial artists seeking to expand their knowledge or explore the historical roots of Aikido (Daito Ryu). No experience or special equipment required, just comfortable clothes, a sense of humor, respect and curiosity.

Weekend Pass (All Sessions): $75. Includes all scheduled classes, both days.

About the Instructors

Our seminar is led by experienced instructors in the direct lineage of Otofuji Ichizo sensei, led by Tom Groendal sensei (7th dan, All Japan Kendo Federation) of Hoshu Dojo. You'll be learning authentic techniques passed down generation after generation for over 400 years.
