About this Event

This month’s site visit highlights Main Street has served as Columbia’s primary business district since the capital city’s founding in 1786. Originally named in honor of Revolutionary War Brigadier General Richard Richardson, this chief thoroughfare came to be known as Main Street after 1892. Between the South Carolina State House and Elmwood Avenue, Main Street contains several blocks of architecturally significant buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places as the “Columbia Commercial Historic District.” The tour will be led by John Sherrer, Director of Preservation. This is walking tour, which will last approximately 75 minutes. Please wear comfortable shoes.


A minimum of 10 participants is required.


COST: $15 per person (which is the Tour Guide Fee). Lunch will NOT be provided

REGISTRATION PROCESS: Please register by noon on Monday September 14th via Eventbrite link.

PARKING: Metered street parking is available.
