Join us on Thursday, September 10, in Remington to celebrate the release of Baltimore author Sam Farhi's debut novel, The Sapsuckers! Sam will be in conversation with Baltimore poet Sylvia Jones.
About The Sapsuckers:
“Don’t tell mom.” Those were the last words Rem ever told his little brother Pete in the summer of 2004 before slipping out the door of their trailer with a half-filled backpack, disappearing into the night forever. Words that haunt Pete almost as much as the ones scrawled over Rem’s lifeless body when the police found him later, hanging by a gorge in the sleepy upstate college town of Ithaca, New York. The police declared it a suicide, but for Pete and his mother Peg, the truth is something both more complicated and more simple than that. The Sapsuckers is a literary anti-mystery suffused with slow dread, a compelling exploration of our obsession with true-crime, and a mesmerizing debut that probes the tenuous connection of bonds that are forged in trauma.

Sam Farhi is from Ithaca, New York, but now based in Baltimore. His debut novel, The Sapsuckers, was recently featured on Dennis Cooper's list of favorite fiction of 2026, so far. His work has appeared in The Opiate, PACKET Biweekly, ThoseThatThis, Vogue Italia Online, HBO’s New York Latino Film Festival, Yale’s Paprika! and The Wall. His zines have been sold at OHWOW Bookclub and aNYthing in downtown Manhattan. He has an MFA in Creative Writing from Long Island University. He is currently working on his next novel, The Sweetheart.
Sylvia Jones is the author of (Meekling Press 2024) and (Relegation Books 2026) She is poetry editor for and serves as a senior reader for the journal Ploughshares. Her writing can be found in: Smartish Pace, American Poetry Review, DIAGRAM, Shenandoah , the Hopkins Review, Common Place Poetics, the Cortland Review, Strange Hymnal, R&R Journal, Mountaineer Books, and elsewhere. Jones lives and writes in Baltimore and has received fellowship and support from the Mastheads at Herman Melville's Arrowhead, Peaked Hill Trust; The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Maryland Center for Culture and Arts, The Walters Museum, Topical Cream; Jack Straw Cultural Center; The Emerging Artist Initiative; OUTWrite DC; Poets at the End of The World Collective; Literary Cleveland; DC Arts Center; Creative Capital; Greedy Reads Bookstore; The Cleveland Museum of Art; Bucknell University, where she was a 2021-22 Stadler Fellow. Sylvia earned her M.F.A. from American University in D.C. and currently teaches at George Washington University.
