The Salzburg Marionette Theater, enchanting audiences since 1913 with fairy tales and operas (including Mozart’s works), is now a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Their performance celebrates the 60th anniversary of The Sound of Music with tales of Maria, a free-spirited postulant who left Nunberg Abbey to become governess to Captain Von Trapp’s seven children. Maria’s kindness and music transformed their strict home, winning their hearts and the Captain’s love. They married, but the Nazi annexation of Austria forced their escape. After a final performance, the family fled over the mountains to Switzerland.Art Supporter Ticket

Maria, a postulant at Nunberg Abbey is too free-spirited to accept discipline of the order. Easily and frequently escapes to the mountains. So, the Mother Abbess arranged for Maria to work as a governess for the wealthy aristocratic navy captain Geroge Von Trapp, a widower with seven children. The captain runs the household as strictly as he does the ships he sails on. Within kindness and understanding, and by adding music to their normally rigorous schedule Maria wins the children ́s hearts. The Capitan, increasingly captivated by Maria, falls in love with her; he returns his affection. Although Capitan Von Trapp is engaged to the elegant socialite Elsa Schraeder, he eventually marries Maria.
The Trapps’ married life is quickly disrupted by Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria. They return from their honeymoon to find a telegram summoning the Capitan to serve in the navy of the Third Reich. But the Capitan is a patriot passionate about fulfilling life that Austria has always offered its citizens.
The family has become well known as an amateur singing group, and at the instigation of a family friend, Max Detweiler, the Trapps make a final appearance at the Salzburg Festival. At the end of the performance, they manage to escape to Nonnberg Abbey and from there they cross the mountains on foot to Switzerland.
