Dive into the world of wild salmon with Salmon Watch! - A field trip designed to ignite curiosity and deepen ecological understanding.
About this Event

Welcome to Salmon Watch!

Your students will explore local rivers, investigate aquatic ecosystems, and witness the incredible life cycle of salmon firsthand. This is hands-on learning in the wild, guided by expert naturalists, and is best suited for upper elementary and middle school students (ages 9–14).

About the Program

Salmon Watch focuses on salmon and freshwater ecosystems. Thanks to funding from local communities, the Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District (JSWCD), and ongoing support from local partners and agencies, field trips are provided at no cost to local schools.

Capacity & Registration

Reserve ONE ticket per class (maximum 30 students per class). Each class date can accommodate up to 60 students, and we often welcome classes from more than one school. If any of the following apply, please contact us directly to arrange possible dates and activities — do not register through Eventbrite:

  • Class size under 10 students or over 30 students
  • Total group size over 60 students
  • Students younger than 3rd grade or older than 8th grade

Schedule & Timing

Field trips run approximately 4 hours (including a lunch break), starting no earlier than 9:00 AM and ending no later than 2:00 PM. Some flexibility is available if needed — please plan for travel time.

Students will rotate through four stations — Salmon Biology, Riparian Ecology, Water Quality, and Macroinvertebrates — with a break for lunch. Each trip is organized into four groups of about 15 students. Since two classes attend each field trip, please divide your class into two groups of roughly 15 students each before arriving so we can start the day smoothly with all four groups ready to go.

Example Schedule

  • 9:30–9:45 | Introduction (Lead Instructor)
  • 9:45–10:20 | Station 1
  • 10:25–11:00 | Station 2
  • 11:05–11:40 | Lunch
  • 11:45–12:20 | Station 3
  • 12:25–1:00 | Station 4
  • 1:05–1:15 | Wrap-up (Lead Instructor)
  • 1:30 | Departure

Instructors & Chaperones

  • Instructors include contracted environmental educators and volunteers from partner organizations who are natural resource professionals.
  • Each trip has a Lead Instructor — your main point of contact for day-of logistics, schedule adjustments, and questions.
  • Chaperone requirement: 1 adult per 15 students (no ticket needed for chaperones).

Important Notes

  • Field trips run rain or shine: Trips proceed in most weather. If conditions require cancellation, the Lead Instructor will contact you directly.
  • Please keep in mind that instructors dedicate significant time and effort to prepare a meaningful day for your students. Coordinate any changes or cancellations with the lead instructor as early as possible to ensure a smooth experience.
  • Although this field trip is free, please treat it with the same commitment you would if it weren’t. It’s a valuable opportunity for students, and spots fill quickly. If your plans change, let us know promptly so another class can benefit from the experience.

Field Trip Confirmation

Registering on Eventbrite is just the first step! After you sign up, one of the contacts listed below will send you a coordination email. Your field trip is not confirmed until coordination is complete and you receive a confirmation email. If we do not receive a reply to the coordination email, your reserved spot will be offered to another class.
