Join the Virginia Living Museum for an exciting citizen science adventure as we explore the forest floor in search of salamanders! Discover the important role these fascinating amphibians play in healthy forest ecosystems and learn how scientists study and monitor local wildlife.
We’ll kick things off with a brief introduction to forest floor ecosystems and salamander survey methods before heading out to search three survey sites, time permitting. If we find salamanders, participants will help collect valuable scientific data, including the animal’s length, sex, location, soil temperature, and weather conditions. Every observation contributes to a better understanding of local salamander populations and the habitats they depend on!
VLM Ectotherms staff and volunteers will be on hand to guide the survey, share their expertise, and answer your questions. Bring your curiosity, wear your sense of adventure, and don’t forget your camera!
A few things to know before you go:
Disposable rubber gloves will be provided and must be worn to participate.
Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, but there’s plenty to learn along the way!
This program includes access to designated survey sites only. General museum access is not included without separate admission.
