Salacious Underbelly of Bath Walking Tour
About this Event
Salacious Underbelly of Bath Walking Tour
Starting at the lengendary commuity owned Bell Inn on Walcot Street, we take you behind the scenes of the Georgian era, through what was once Bath's central district of artisans and courtesans, telling tales of the talent and the tragedy of those that served high society. We'll take in some of the gambling dens where fortunes won through colonialism and the slave trade were risked and lost, exploring the sources of this extravagant wealth, as well as the stories of the card sharks and career gamblers who sought to use their skills to siphon it off. We'll take in Sydney Gardens, where acrobats and entertainers created a nightly festival with no safety nets, as well as the house of Jane Austen, whose satirisation of the wealth hungry aristocrats and the limited 'provision for well-educated young women of small fortune' have characterised our understanding of this age of wealth and decadence, elegance and cruelty. This tour takes us to some of the most elegant addresses of Pulteney Street and Sydney gardens, ending at the Pulteney Arms pub. Costumes encouraged.
Tour by Dr. Rosalyn Bold, Bath resident and anthropologist.
