Born in central Italy, he was sent to school when he was about fourteen. Shocked at the corrupt customs of his schoolmates, he fled to Rome and joined a community of religious students. After a while he left them and made his way into the desert wilderness where he lived alone in a cave for three years. About 530 he founded an abbey on the road to Naples and lived there until his death. All we know of his personality shows him to be a strong, but pleasant and friendly man. He became famous as a wonder-worker before he died standing at the altar with outstretched arms. Saint Benedict was a monk. He was especially known for his devout rules for how monks and holy men should behave. He was known for exercising unclean spirits.
His story includes two assassination attempts that he himself thwarted with prayers. Each of these attempts is documented on his metal in the form of a raven or snake coming out of a goblet and the goblet breaking. In this attempt someone tried to poison him and as he prayed his blessing over the water or wine the goblet either broke or tipped spilling the poison. The second attempt involves someone giving him poinsoned food. He performed his blessing over it and a raven swooped in and took the bread saving his life.
